Lynden is a thriving small city in the U.S.-Canada border region, located about three miles south of a busy border crossing. The community is an economic hub for Northwest Washington's scenic farming region, and a big tourism draw. Lynden's heritage as an early 20th century Dutch farming community is nicely preserved in the city's charming downtown, which has been made-over in Dutch themes, complete with a small windmill. Downtown Lynden is home to a collection of antique stores, restaurants, and a bakery, all offering a distinct Dutch flavor. Lynden's annual spring festival brings the Dutch tradition alive with a parade, street sweeping, and "klompen" (wooden shoe) dances.
