Whatcom Middle School
Whatcom Middle School, home of the Wildcats, was the largest middle school in Bellingham, Washington until tragedy struck earlier this year, in November 2009. A fire broke out at night, and while no one was hurt, it destroyed the building irreparably, forcing its students into other schools until they could rebuild it. The Whatcom Middle School students have spread to the three other middle schools of the district, and a few 6th graders have even been forced to stay at their respective elementary schools until they can solve the space problem. The school’s address is 810 Halleck St, and it was conveniently located in the Lettered Streets neighborhood. The rebuilding project has already begun on the same site, and it is expected to take two to three years to complete. As of January 2010, the cause and source of the fire that devastated this unique school is still unknown.
In the 2006-2007 school year, Whatcom Middle School students met 17 out of the 19 WASL standards for Yearly Adequate Progress, and failed only in math and reading assessments for Special Education students. The building was first built in 1903, though it was expanded on and remodeled several times, and it was originally a high school. It wasn’t until 1967 that is officially became Whatcom Middle School. The devastation caused by this fire was heart breaking for everyone.
